Quiet year at the Farm again this year.  My daughter and her husband came up for a visit.  As he is a farmer and was used to operating equipment, I suggested he help me out and haul some gravel.  That turned into a bit of a fiasco.  The gravel pit was 20 minutes away so it should have been a 1 hour round trip including loading at that end and spreading on this end.  He was taking 2 1/2 hours each trip and only completed three in one day.  On his second load he tried to turn the loaded truck around in a low spot in the pasture and buried the back end up to the bottom of the box.  To get him out, we had to take the side by side over to the neighbours and borrow his big Massey.  We did manage to get the truck unstuck but that took another two hours.  It was a very frustrating day.

The next morning, my daughter informed me her husband was sick and wanted to go home.  I was sorry to see my daughter go but was relieved to see the back end of my son-in-law.  It was still early when they departed so I thought I'd try my hand at hauling gravel.  This was my first go but I was able to get the hang of it fairly quick.  During my first stop at the pit I learned why the SIL was taking so long with each load.  Each time he'd get to the pit, he hang around for more than an hour bullshitting with the guy that was loading.  I managed six loads that day and seven the next without busting a gut.  Those 16 loads only covered about a quarter of my 1 1/4 mile road but the acquisition of the truck was starting to pay off.

Up until now, we assumed our east property line followed the fence and ended at the creek.  Thinking about it though, the creek kind of ran slightly northwest so that really didn't make sense.  It was one of those things that really didn't matter but it bothered me enough that I hired a surveyor out of Fairview to pin my corners and mark the property lines.  Got a bit of a surprise from the results.  Turns out our north property line was at the top of the creek gully just behind where our trailer was situated, 50 yards south of the creek.  Our east fence line also veered east a bit the last hundred yards or so which put our northeast pin 10 yards in from where we thought it should be.  Quite enlightening.   Quite by accident though, the fence posts we pounded along the most northerly line for our rail fence lined up exactly along our actual property line.

Every sort of wild animal was thriving on our quarters, especially since we seeded those oats and put in the alfalfa..
