Our dog Jazz was a real pleasure to have as a companion up at the farm.  So much so that in May we went back to the kennel Jazz was from and adopted her niece Star.

Early in June, Lee and I picked up a 12' x 20' metal clad shed kit in Whitecourt and hauled it north.  The following weekend, I drove up alone to build the shed floor.  While I was screwing down the decking, I suddenly had an eerie feeling I wasn't alone.  Looking up, I was face-to-face with a tiny whitetail fawn.  She must have been hidden close-by by her mother and curiosity got the better of her.  She stood there five feet from me on wobbly legs for a couple of minutes inspecting me and my work.  She then wobbled off into the trees.  No fear at all.  Wonderful experience.  Lee and I built and finished the shed the following weekend.

One afternoon, we decided we were going to explore the country north of us.  Driving down roads and up cutlines we managed to work our way 15 miles from the farm and found some great wilderness.  Down one cutline we noticed some movement ahead of us.  First we saw the black bear sow, then one, two, three cubs.  With mom monitoring the situation, the cubs were playing in the middle of the cutline in front of us.  After a few minutes, mom must have gotten a bit nervous with us sitting there 50 yards away,  She barked once, and all three cubs immediately ran into the bush.  Each one picked their own tree and up they went.  When the cubs were safe mom walked off the cutline a few yards and stood there.  We took this opportunity to continue along.  Passing the sow, she stood there alertly watching us but not once did she show any sign of aggression.

It was a great summer.  We met and got to know Brandon, his wife Winter and their daughter Justyne,  They were our neighbours on the next quarter east of us.  Brandon's parents Glenn & Cindi had the quarter next to them.  Our son Joe along with Harold (my hunting buddy) and Harold's son Vic came up for a visit.
